The band program at Summersville School has
enjoyed a long tradition of high quality performances, a large number of
transfers to the Mt. Vernon Township High School Band and strong parental and
community support. The band performs two regular concerts per year, plus
appearing at all home basketball games (boys' and girls') where possible.
Also, the Summersville School Band performs in the annual Jefferson County
Music In Our Schools Concert. The Summersville Band has performed
for former First Lady Barbara Bush during her visit to Mt. Vernon
while campaigning for her husband and for former Governor George Ryan
during a visit of his to Summersville School. The Band has also served as
kick-off entertainment for the United Fund of Jefferson County. In addition, the band
provides the opportunity for students to perform in the annual Illinois
Grade School Music Association Solo and Ensemble Contests and Organization
Contests. The Summersville Band has compiled an impressive record
of high ratings in these contests. The past thirteen years have yielded the
following results for band organization State contests:

The First Superior rating is
the highest rating awarded by the Illinois Grade School Music Association
and signifies that a panel of three judges has given a unanimous rating
of First Superior. |
All students from 5th through 8th grade are
eligible to participate in the Summersville School Band and its activities.
Students are normally started in the Cadet Band during the Fourth Grade and
receive group instruction on their selected instruments, plus a full band
rehearsal every week.
The Concert Band rehearses for a full period
three days a week plus each band section will have one sectional rehearsal per
week. Some school instruments are available for student usage. |
